In order to correctly assess students, teachers must understand and use multiple methods of assessment to engage learners in their own growth, monitor learner progress and to guide the teachers and learners decision making. First, in order to correctly assess students, teachers must use and understand multiple methods of assessment to engage learners. Teachers should always be assessing during their lesson (formative assessments) and after their lesson (summative assessments). Typically, when people think of assessments, the first thing people think of are tests. There are different types of testing, diagnostic, benchmark, norm reference, and criterion based. There are also different ways to test such as multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank, word bank, timed test, and open-ended questions. As a teacher, you must be able to accurately figure out which test is suitable for your lesson. The second important part of testing is monitoring the learner’s progress. This can be done by keeping track of grades of keeping a portfolio for the student. This is important because it helps teachers gain a better understanding of student’s strengths and weaknesses. The whole point in assessments is to collect data in order to guide your lesson. This can tell a teacher whether or not to keep expanding on a topic or move on. This also informs the teacher the academic achievement level of students—if they are advanced, satisfactory or if they need improvement. With this information, a teacher should be able to customize the lesson to fit the student’s diverse needs. This information is not only helpful to teachers but to students as well.
