I wish to study at Wake Forest because my passions perfectly align with the University. In the past four years, I have faced countless rejections and felt the rewards and joy that accompanied my successes. I studied ballet for over twenty-five hours every week and dedicated my summers to training at prestigious schools. Ballet taught me that I am my happiest and most fulfilled while passionately working towards a goal. However, ballet also took over my life until there was no room for other interests and it determined my entire identity. I knew that I wanted more than tutus and tights in my life, that I was not treating myself with enough love, and that I had to step away from my passion to know myself as a person. Ballet, certain academic pursuits, and pressure from myself left me with feelings of rejection and failure. However, I continue to fight for my happiness, success, and consequently, admission to Wake. Langston Hughes’s poem, “Mother to Son”, illustrates this fight for me. When I was in middle school, I memorized the poem and would recite it to my grandmother. Recently, she read me the same poem. I crave to be challenged by differences and peers that push me. At Wake, I felt a spark and ambition among students. College is not exciting to me because of the opportunity to be independent; I moved away from home at fourteen and lived on campus at UNCSA. I am thrilled to be attending college because of the opportunity to intensely study subjects that evoke curiosity and inspire me. Although becoming employable is important, I also view college as an opportunity to learn for the joy of learning and to become a well-rounded citizen that cares for her community and learns something new every day regardless of her occupation.
