When looking at the strengths and limitations of different assessment methods, it is important to look at the different range of both learner styles and Learners preferred work styles. There are three types of learner styles which we focus on and they are; Explorers, Practitioners and Reviewers. There are also different work styles that learners use and these could be through; Teamwork, Initiative, Perseverence and Enthusiasm. It is important to bear these in styles in mind when looking at different assessment methods as some methods are better suited than others.
The assessment methods I am going to look at are, Observations, Professional Discussions and Question and Answer sessions based around the knowledge.
Observations are a great method of assessment, and suits most learner styles. It is an opportunity to see the learner in their natural environment, which in turn will relax the learner, as, as an assessor we should be very much in the background, so as not to intimidate the learner. The benefit of this method is that it shows you as an assessor whether the learner has the knowledge and what extra support they need. If the learner feels at ease, has completed the learnings and is confident then there will be a lot more gained form this method. If the learner is not ready or has not completed the learnings and the Q and A still happens then this can do more damage than good, by denting their confidence and motivation. It is important the learners are given time to be ready for these. This method is a great way of clearing up a few points , maybe to clarify some gaps from the Professional Discussion or the Observation. This will then in turn motivate the learner as they will see an increase in progress of the
