In an article written for NASDAQ, Stefan Topfer discusses the importance of adequate planning in a small business. Topfer compares improper business planning to going on long journey without a road map. There is no denying the importance of business planning. Devers mission statement is “To provide superior quality products and services exceeding customer expectations.” The mission statement is meant to separate Dever from its competitors. It gives a brief description of what the company is all about. The mission statement, however, is much more important than it may seem. Due to their organization structure, planning is done within each department. This means that the marketing department has different operational goals than the accounting department, but they all work toward the same strategic goal. According to Kevin Gillen, a sales manager, most of the planning in the sales department is done at the beginning of the year and the operations for the year have to work with the ideas given in strategic plan. One common theme of the goals within each department is the focus on cost-effectiveness and providing excellent customer service. Along with each department having different operational goals, each specific customer account comes with a goal as well. Managers of Dever have a very wide span of management, and often work with other departments as well as their own. Mr. Gillen described this as “managers wear a lot of hats.” Due to the wide span of management, managers will occasionally have to assist with the firing of people who they have rarely worked with or even seen. The real decision here comes when determining whether or not an employee’s actions were bad enough to be cause for termination. According to Suzanne Lucas of MoneyWatch, firing employees is one of the toughest tasks of a manager. She also mentions that it should be done very carefully, in order to prevent problems with the employee. One way to do this involves the use of the Kepner-Tregoe model. This would essentially allow them to rank the values most important to Dever, and determine whether or not the employees at hand are living up to or capable of living up to those
