Why are you interested in joining the Honors College, and how do you believe you would contribute to this interdisciplinary learning community?

The Honors College at Purdue gives me the chance to interact with all disciplines of engineering within a smaller community of unique perspectives. The specialized programs of research, courses and study abroads are intriguing to me because I always strive to try new things. I want to further my knowledge in areas of my interest and work on undergraduate research like Dr. Qingyou Han’s Materials Processing Technology Development and have the resources to work on my thesis. Beyond my major, there are abundant number of intriguing courses that I would only be able to take as a member of the Honors …show more content…

This idea manifested itself in projects like designing batteries with alternative metals, conducting experimentation on the Magnus Effect, or differentiating HEK293 human stem cells at Brown University’s BioMedical Laboratory. It wasn’t until I combined all these interests that I found how I was going to help the world. My interest in Materials Engineering started with this desire to create, and grew when I eventually realized how expansive the field is and how rich the opportunities are. If any engineering discipline were to embody all aspects of interdisciplinary study, it would be Materials Engineering. With an evolving field, it combines the fundamental sciences and the core concepts of engineering. Materials Engineering is based on physics concepts like the interaction of atoms as well as chemistry concepts such as the study of properties. The further specialization of the field begins to incorporate the processing and control of materials which brings the engineering aspect to the field. I specifically want to take this concentrate on bio-materials and apply biological science to the world of materials engineering to find new ways to treat previously incurable diseases and make advancements in medicine in general. This complete encapsulation of these sciences is the exact interdisciplinary relationship that I crave to understand and it would fit perfectly with the Purdue Honors College
