Leadership Philosophy Statement

Leadership is not a position or rank, it is being the example, with a positive attitude and treating others with respect. A good leader knows how to get people to follow. To be a good leader you must also know how to follow. Throughout my career I have learned how to do both. Early in my career I made mistakes but I’m glad I had a good leader that I could look up to and that was inspirational in a way that kept me from making more mistakes. That leader happen to be a CWO that found out how to motivate me in ways that only he could reach me. If it weren’t for this CWO I wouldn’t have made it past my first unit. I would say that I need to do a better job on asking questions of my supervisor and subordinates on how I am doing as a leader other than during EES counseling and establish goals to better my interactions with others. Listen to the feedback whether it is good or bad and make the change necessary in order to develop as a leader. Part two of being a leader is the ability to speak with genuine conviction about the higher meaning and purpose of our work. As a Storekeeper, most of our work is behind the scenes and not as glorious as other rates but I must do a better job of explaining the reason why we do what we do and the impact that it has when we don’t. I must also remember that there is a world outside of being a SK and keep members informed of the organizations vision as a whole. Part Three of being a leader is the ability to ensure people are creatively rewarded for their contributions to the success of our projects/tasks. Often times I set expectations of my people but forget that sometimes people need more than just “Thank you”. I need to realize that sometimes it should be more award recognition or CG3307’s to highlight the member’s accomplishment or socialize the good things that people in my division are doing.
