Excellences and Virtues in Chemical Engineering

When I was younger, I always enjoyed reading about King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. These men were the supposed embodiment of the virtues such as honesty and courage. It always fascinated me how these stories held these men in such high regard and how these men were able to practice these virtuous characteristics. Even though my career as a knight never came to fruition, I still believe that professional and personal lives should be led with certain virtuous characteristics. One in particular is the moral virtue of perseverance. My first two years at university was very strenuous. Coming out of high school, I had viewed myself as unstoppable and capable of anything. This came to a grinding halt when I failed one of my engineering courses. It was then I realized the long road ahead of myself. It would have been easier to simply say that chemical engineering is not the path for me but I truly believed that chemical engineering is what I want to do. So I persevered. Texas A&M University has an extremely rigorous chemical engineering coursework; however, it is beneficial. It teaches that perseverance is rewarded and failure is encouraged if and only if one can learn from that failure. I have had two internships despite the fact that I failed miserably at the beginning. As a child, my mother had always taught me to be treat others with kindness. This was doing simple deeds such opening door for someone who is carrying things or helping someone with something that is troubling them. By applying kindness in environmental and clean energy field, I can understand how important the environment is to the world. It allows me to have another perspective of why moving toward a cleaner energy is better for everyone in the world. The other virtue that I have practiced is that of courage. There are still many skeptics in the environmental and clean energy industry. It takes courage to stand up and drown out all the criticism. It also takes courage to introduce new ideas whenever there is never a guarantee that those ideas work. These virtues are important to be a unique individual in the
