Category 1: Interest in teaching and children/ young people

My motivation to pursue teaching has been founded on the basis of both family and community influence, aswell as my own personal desire to educate, and support children in their early schooling lives.

My mother is currently a Deputy Principal and teacher who has lived out her faith through leadership, and education of secondary students. Growing up surrounded by her passion and drive for her career I became interested in the profession. Additionally, I have been inspired by teachers from my Catholic education at St Vincent’s College, who were also pivotal in shaping my own values, beliefs, and my passion for learning. My passion for young people, and my catholic faith based in the values of service and community have been foundations throughout my life. The community of school is one that I hold close as a result of my catholic education. I understand the value of community within a school environment, and the importance of this to all members such as the parish, parents and staff. To continue my career in such an environment would enable me to live out my passion for young people, whilst being supported in a Catholic community through which I thrive.

I have always had a strong interest in children and education. I am interested in the development of the whole child, which includes the curriculum aswell as assisting in a child’s understanding of the potential and talents they hold. Young children have vivid imaginations and such passion for discovering and learning, and I believe that through this, the way in which they learn is ever changing and demanding of new and creative ideas.

Being a good teaching means providing children with the skills, tools and encouragement to learn and grow both academically, socially and emotionally. Following my completion of school, I have engaged in both leadership and learning roles which have demonstrated to me, as they will to you why I am suitable to be a primary school teacher.

Through my role as an out of school hours (OOSH) carer, I have been engaged in both learning in leadership activities. I have demonstrated skills in organisation, planning, and interpersonal communication, through working with groups of over 20 children. My personal learning activities within this role have led me to better myself in areas of controlling group settings, handling differing children’s needs, and managing behaviour.

Organisation of tasks including assisting in developing weekly programs, and carrying out daily activities such as group time, demonstrates my enthusiasm for working with children and providing an engaging and safe space for them to be. Such tasks also convey my skills in planning, and additionally through my role I have been willing to learn from experience and be flexible with organisation, as in a fast paced environment with groups things cannot also go strictly to plan. My ability to remain structured whilst providing room to be flexible demonstrates my conscientiousness and adaptability within this environment.
