Syria is in a state of turmoil and we must help the Syrian people. The civil war in Syria has destroyed the country. More than 250,000 Syrians have died and 11 million have been displaced from their homes. When one looks at the pictures of Syria, one looks at pictures of rubble. Houses have been destroyed, rubble and graffiti is everywhere, and the country is in a state of poverty. Yes, America has plenty of its own issues, whether it be gun violence, police violence, and our economy, and I do think we need to find ways to solve these problems. However, just because we have problems of our own does not mean we should ignore the problems in the rest of the world. If we wanted to have this attitude we would have needed to listen to George Washington in his farewell address when he urged us to stay out of world affairs. We have never listened to Washington though because it was only two years later in 1798 that we were involved in the Quasi-Wars with France. Since we have never taken the attitude to stay out of world affairs we cannot start now. The conflict of Syrian refugees and terrorist organizations is the next world affair we must deal with. America was formed by people who were fleeing bad situations. Why should we stop accepting people who are trying to enter our country for the same reason so many others have? Leaving people to suffer and die in their own country instead of accepting them into ours where they can live happy lives is morally wrong. America must take the ethical high road and not only let the refugees in, but welcome them. We messed this up one time already when Jews sought shelter here in America during World War II.
