Honors College Appeal – Ryan Moon
Outline:
I thrived spending my first semester (fall 2017) in Italy, thanks to the Honors College, socially and academically. The initial shock of coming back to America and trying to adjust to college never wore off, and knocked me into my most intense bout of anxiety and depression I have experienced. Attached is proof that I have been treated for these issues in the past, as well as proof that I am currently in intensive group therapy to find and fix the problems that caused this. I joined a fraternity and participated in some of their charity work but other than that was mainly sedentary for the semester. This is something I regret and am looking to change. I thrived there in every sense: amazing experiences, friends, and classes. I felt extremely secure in the fact that I had adjusted to college life, something I had been worried about previously, because I had ripped myself completely away from my parents and gone to a different country. In my treatment for anxiety and depression, I have determined that something that triggers them is large amounts of change, like new places and new people. There were times that I had issues completing my work overseas because of these issues, but I brought myself out of those dark spots and still ended up with a 3.7 GPA for the semester.
Overcoming difficulty in Italy made me feel secure in returning to Kent State’s main campus seamlessly. However, upon returning, the issues quickly returned worse than they had before. Perhaps it was the “stakes” that were now in effect; maintaining an honors college level GPA, working on things that would actually impact my future, and being close enough to home that my parents would probably be taking a more active role in my college experience.
