Classroom management is vital for any teacher to establish a successful learning environment in their classroom. Teachers manage their classroom on a daily basis and need to establish a set of expectations. These expectations will ensure that productive and meaningful learning experiences happen for all of their students. My outlook on classroom management is an intentional one. I want to be an intentional teacher that constantly thinks about the outcome I want for my students. (Slavin, 2009) In order to be an intentional teacher and facilitate the learning process for my students I will need to develop a strong set of policies and procedures for my classroom. The first rule or classroom policy will require students to be respectful and kind to one another. This will convey to my students that we will treat each other with respect and kindness. I believe that this rule will help my students learn appropriate ways to treat one another. I want my students to feel comfortable in my class and not have to worry about mistreatment from their classmates or the teacher. Students will be required to follow explicit directions. (Canter, 2010) This rule will help them to always listen and understand what I expect from them in all situations. Following directions will also ensure that students produce their best work. Requiring students to raise their hands to share ideas and to leave their seats helps guarantee that disruptive behavior will be kept to a minimum during instruction. I will make sure my students have the opportunity to participate in class activities and discussions in a respectful manner. When students raise their hands during a lesson or activity they are respectfully demonstrating that they are aware of other students’ learning in progress. This will help make student participation easier and fair if they are all guaranteed an opportunity to share their ideas and opinions during class. If and when the student receives two warnings I will inform the parent in the behavior log.
• 2nd time: After the verbal warnings are given and the misbehavior continues the student will receive a note in the behavior log and a time out to reflect on their behavior. The student will be required to sit a separate desk or sit out at recess for a few minutes.
• 3rd time: If the misbehavior continues or escalates the student will receive all of the above. I will call parent as soon as time permits to inform them of the student’s misbehavior.
• Severe Disruptions: Depending on the severity of the action, a conference may need to be scheduled with the student’s parent or a visit to the principal with a referral to address the disciplinary problem.
Daily Classroom Procedures
Students will be expected to follow the classroom rules/policies at all times while at school. The daily routine of a classroom runs smoothly if and only if the student’s follow the rules implicitly. My class will have to be systematically taught the proper way to follow daily classroom procedures. (Canter, 2010) There are many types of classroom procedures that fall under instructional activities, basic everyday routines, and policies and expectations.
