A large group of students in the United States makeup a large population of English language learners. Students who are considered English language learners undergo many challenges in their education, and without the necessary support and resources from their educators it can make it hard for them to succeed. A teacher plays a significant role in the success of a child, and it is crucial for them to be able to provide the proper education to students whose first language is not English. It is also very important for teachers to understand the challenges that these students are facing. Having empathy towards the students allows for the teacher to create better connections and relationships to better help them.
I am currently teaching at Swainston Middle School in North Las Vegas. Our student population is very diverse, including English Language Learners (ELLs). During this time as a teacher, I have served students with different language needs. It has been my goal to engage ELL students in my lessons as every other student. It is my opinion that as teachers we are all language teachers.
Saint Augustine learns that everyone and everything is part of God’s creation (2,2). Augustine is now about 29 years old and he is still living in Carthage, but while he is living in Carthage he comes across a man named Faustus. Faustus happens t be a very respected sage of the Manichees (6,10). Augustine seemed to be questioning the long-winded myths of the Manichees because he was comparing his early readings of philosophy to their beliefs (3,3). Augustine had many debates with Faustus but to me it seemed as if Augustine couldn’t really get a word in or really question anything about what Faustus was saying (6,11).
What do you currently teach and where? I am a December graduate of the University of Charleston. I graduated magna cum laude. After graduation I began substituting. I substituted at a variety of schools in Kanawha County in a variety of grades.
When children are little they always have dreams of what they want to be when they grow up. Some kids want to be ballerinas, firemen, and astronauts. for as long as I can remember I've always wanted to be a teacher. The areas I wanted to teach have always deferred over the years, but my love for teaching has always stayed the same. I remember when I was younger, I would force my siblings to play teacher with me.
When I first started teaching, it was exciting. I loved education and working with young people. I was very idealistic and as corny as it may sound, I thought in my own way I was changing the world. Through the years, my initial excitement turned to stress and anxiety.
I strongly believe a teacher must always understand the student interest to always be adaptable. By establishing a great rapport with students, it allows the teacher to be relatable to students. It gives students something to look forward to when they get to school and allows both the teacher and student to create strong relationships. I believe a teacher that understands the culture of the school district as a whole is able to be understand students through multiple perspectives. Having a teacher that establishes a solid rapport with students is able make connections with students on specific interests and allows the teacher to adaptable in the classroom.
As a future teacher I hope to teach first or second grade. I love that age group and I enjoy the curriculum that is taught in those grades. As a teacher, you must have a set of professional skills and goals to be successful in your career. The professional skills that I intend to exhibit as I go into the teaching field are confidence, communication, enthusiasm, organization, innovation, knowledge of technology, time and classroom management, and flexibility. In five years I imagine that I will be teaching in a first or second grade classroom.
To be a good teacher I would like my students to learn from me the qualities of motivation, a good personality, kindness and sympathy I have the responsibility of forming an excellent future in the lives of young children. With this responsibility I as a teacher, must work on everything related to the education of children to be considered "a good teacher." Therefore, to set a good example as a teacher towards students and to learn, is to motivate them to always have something new to learn. In this way it would always be pushing students to want to do their best by creating an interesting and creative learning environment.
As a student, our daily routine of going to class, studying, and doing homework becomes unexciting and repetitive as the semester continues. Although teachers put a lot of efforts into preparing, teaching and reflecting about their lessons, students do not always appreciate their teacher’s efforts due to an absence of a connection with their teachers and the atmosphere of their learning environment. I think it is important to establish an individual connection and relationship with each student to make the student feel like they are valued by the teacher. If a student feels like their teachers genuinely care about their well-being emotionally, and they have a relationship beyond teacher and student, it becomes very easy for a student to feel valued. I think teachers can establish such relationship with their students by knowing more about their hobbies, family and personal life, and to simply engage in small talk about the student’s hobbies.
My role as a teacher is to guide each student in providing access to information that will benefit him or her in the real world. I should first have the knowledge of the students’ interests to be able to guide them and teach them. I will develop a curriculum around the students’ interests to motivate them to learn and work hard to master the skills necessary to reach their goals. I will incorporate themes, projects, presentations, group work, individual works, and hands-on learning to mold them to be active students. Students learn a lot better when they have a first hand experience of what was being taught to them instead of just giving them the lesson because it expands the student's’ knowledge.
Teaching is an opportunity to see kid’s progress throughout a school year and help them succeed in the career path they chose for themselves. This is why I want to be a teacher. I want to help make all my students become successful and be there for them for support. I want to teach because I enjoy getting up everyday to see the children’s bright faces as they are just as excited to see me and discuss their weekend shenanigans. I am a big people person and always upbeat.
Educating is one of the most important careers someone can ever have. Some way shape or form as an educator you can impact the lives of students you teach. As I grew up I always wanted to be a teacher. I strongly believe in educating the youth. Day in and day out I think about ways to create fun lessons so students can learn.
I decided to pursue a career as a teacher because I can’t remember a time where I wanted to do any other job more. It is easy to become discouraged about going into education because teachers don’t make the most money and they aren’t always valued as much they should be. People constantly remind me of the “downfalls” of being a teacher but it has never scared me away. I figure that those people don’t have what it takes to be an educator. I think that all students deserve to have a teacher that chooses to be there everyday because they genuinely care about seeing them succeed.
I have always had a passion for teaching others helping with problems that they cannot solve but that I can. I know my willingness to help others and put them before myself is a trait I inherited from my mother. She was an Art teacher for many years at different districts and different grade levels until she became sick and was forced to retire. I loved hearing the success stories about her kids and the different awards they were winning in their art competitions. I loved seeing her excitement when she told me about a new project she had come up with that her students couldn’t wait to start.
