The purpose of this study is to understand the feeding rate of Daphnia magna. D. magna is a species of Daphnia that belongs to the suborder Cladocera (Ebert, 2005). They live in freshwater and feed on small, suspended particles in the surrounding water. They are filter feeders. Leaf-like appendages, called phyllopods provide a filtering apparatus for the collection of food.
Now days with classrooms so large and with the growing amount of required curriculum for teachers to teach, it is understandable for teachers to lose that connection with their students. For me, I have been lucky enough to have had two of the most influential and amazing teachers.
A large group of students in the United States makeup a large population of English language learners. Students who are considered English language learners undergo many challenges in their education, and without the necessary support and resources from their educators it can make it hard for them to succeed. A teacher plays a significant role in the success of a child, and it is crucial for them to be able to provide the proper education to students whose first language is not English. It is also very important for teachers to understand the challenges that these students are facing. Having empathy towards the students allows for the teacher to create better connections and relationships to better help them.
What do you currently teach and where? I am a December graduate of the University of Charleston. I graduated magna cum laude. After graduation I began substituting. I substituted at a variety of schools in Kanawha County in a variety of grades.
As a future teacher looking toward a time when I will be responsible for a classroom of my own, the prospects are terrifying. Students arrive in the classroom with various strengths and weaknesses with the expectation that I can and will teach them the given curriculum. Admittedly, some students will be easier to connect with and teach than others. This is not the fault of the students, but rather the fault of the teacher. However, this is not to say that the teacher should be held entirely responsible for the challenges that he/she may face and fail; but the teacher can surely be held responsible for coming to an expected challenge and failing due to lack of preparation or effort.
Besides Ian’s expression about his love for the classroom, he expressed to us how being a teacher is very difficult. Ian explained how as you teach kids, they teach you as well. Understanding that every student learns differently is one of the biggest struggles for teachers. Teachers must be able to learn more than one or two ways of teaching for the students so they are able to comprehend the lessons.
When children are little they always have dreams of what they want to be when they grow up. Some kids want to be ballerinas, firemen, and astronauts. for as long as I can remember I've always wanted to be a teacher. The areas I wanted to teach have always deferred over the years, but my love for teaching has always stayed the same. I remember when I was younger, I would force my siblings to play teacher with me.
Growing up, I always knew I wanted to become a teacher. I knew it would be challenging, but rewarding with many benefits to come. But no one ever told me it can result in me getting sued. I graduated from Rutgers University in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and I was on my way to finishing up my teaching certification. The following school year I was set to start student teaching, but everything changed when the Superintendent of my old Middle School offered me position teaching math.
With technology at our fingertips, it is very easy to assess journals and articles about teachers of the year and how these teachers positively impacted the students. Looking at these articles, I wonder what qualities must a teacher possess in order to garner one of the most respected and honorable professional awards. All teachers want to help their students and make an impact in their lives. All teachers want their students to succeed. But what makes these individuals so different?
By correcting a student’s negative behavior, and admiring the student’s positive behavior, the teacher will promote positive change. It is important for the teacher and student to be on the same page. If the student knows that the teacher will listen and understand their concerns, the student will feel comfortable enough to express their feelings. This will strengthen the teacher and student relationship. Responsibility is important when problems arise in the classroom.
I believe that there are many attributes that an outstanding teacher must possess such as compassion, leadership, passion, application of content knowledge, and effective classroom management. A teacher must have passion for his or her job. Teaching is demanding of time, effort, and commitment. Students respond best to a teacher that is excited to be there.
Being very understanding of a student problems are helpful too. If you understand the situation helps them and lets them know you care. The students should always come
Whether it’s children raising their educational opportunities, adults seeking employment, or just someone who hopes to travel to an English-speaking country, there is great importance in the English language. Despite my general passion for teaching, I want to teach ESL because it makes a difference. Learning another language isn’t just like learning a new subject. Learning new languages changes lives by opening roads to countries, cultures, people, and opportunities. I’ve participated in assistant teaching in a college level ESL course as a senior in university in a position as an English Speaking instructor.
Fingers trembling, the student punches the buttons of the calculator. It would be easy for the student to say “I don’t know,” and hope that I, the teacher, move on to someone else. Slowly the student reads the calculator output. I listen, then smile. The relief flooding through the student is evident, along with something new—confidence.
This resulted in my acquisition of methods and approaches I would like to maintain with my students. To start off, a teacher is not defined by being a person that keeps control of a classroom and recites information. A teacher is a friend, a parental figure, a role model, a confidant and a good listener just as much as he or she is a good speaker. The teachers observed would simply ask a question relating to the students’ opinions or lives and based on these answers they would introduce or explain any concept or linguistic feature. Students are egocentric by nature and relate new ideas to themselves.
