Violent Videogames Can Cause Violent Behavior

The top selling videogames in the United States contain violence and/or have a rating of “Mature” or “Adult only”. Many people are well aware of the rating, but to drawn into the game to care. Videogames are popular to a wide selection of ages; from young children to teens, to even adults. Many people may not see it, but videogames can affect the way you think and act. Children are the most impressionable and tend to copy what they hear and see. So how do you think violent videogames have an effect on them?

Family violence can be a huge source of youth violence. Parents are the children’s role models. Children watch what their parents do, and watching them in a violent way can be traumatic. "No one is born abusive, and all the bullies start out as victims." (Linda Esposito). Whether it is physical, mental, or emotional abuse, or if a child is a direct victim or just a witness, it can still greatly affect them and how they go about themselves. If all they are used to is violence, then most likely they will grow up using violence as a way to get through life. They see no consequences, as a game would. Movies, television, music, and the media in general can all affect the way you think and feel. Watching someone hurt people and become the “cool kid”, could lead children to think they have to hurt people to be cool or fit in. Listening to your favorite artist rap or sing about guns and killing people or beating their girlfriend could affect the way you look at those things. Violence could come from many places, but in videogames you're the person doing the violence. Children learn from what they see, and when they are seeing themselves rewarded in games for this violence, it may just be the cause of their violent
