Mission, Vision, and Strategic Planning Simply put, a mission statement is why an organization exists, and the vision statement depicts what the organization hopes to become in the future. For these statements to serve their function, they should be concise, memorable, and consistent with the current practice. Strategic planning is the reoccurring process of advancing a course of action towards fulfilling the mission. This essay elucidates the concepts of mission, vision, and strategic planning, and provides examples of McLean Hospital, a healthcare organization that specializes in psychiatric care, located in the metropolitan Boston area of Massachusetts.
