One final reason that college athletes should not receive money is that it would drastically hurt the economy with the sports business, which in turn would hurt the economy of the common day civilians. With the excessive and unnecessary payment of college athletes, the poverty gap that already exists today would only continue to increase. The rich and famous people will only continue to earn more money and the poor people will only experience more hardships and financial trouble. Barrett Sallee, a well-known and respected journalist in the NBA, analyzes the effects of removing an agent and how it would negatively affect the economy: “A removal of the agency business at the professional level would result in tremendous job loss because these people rely on athletes to utilize their services” (Sallee). Furthermore, he explains that agents often negotiate with their skills to get their athletes the best deal possible while factoring transportation and living costs for these athletes. These skills are essential skills that athletes take for granted because they do not have to specifically focus on when they earn their next paycheck or when they earn their next sponsorship opportunity. Sports agents also advertise their clients through the use of social media so that the players can keep their focus on the court and so that other people take notice of all of the accolades that come with it. If people were to hypothetically eliminate all of the jobs in the sports business industry, athletes would be taken advantage of because they would not have the skills necessary to structure a good financial deal with the
