Should the drinking age be lowered to 18 years old? For many years the drinking age has been argued to be changed to 18 years old. Ever since prohibition and the age change to 21 years old in 1984, people have been arguing to move it down again to 18 years old. Changing the drinking age back down to 18 years of age will take years because previous efforts, prove that 18 year olds will not be able to handle the alcohol. There is evidence that 18 year olds cannot handle the alcohol and it would be more dangerous to let them drink, rather than them sneaking around and drinking. There are some states that allow underage drinking with a few exceptions. “All 50 US states that have set their minimum drinking age to 21 although exceptions do exist on a state-by-state basis, for consumption at home, under adult supervision, for medical necessity, and other reasons” (Drinking). Some exceptions for Illinois include, consuming alcohol on non selling premises, with parental supervision. This is saying that if you have parental supervision you can get legally drink whenever you want at home. Only 29 states allow this law to happen, and 6 states allow underage drinking to happen without parental supervision on private non selling premises. The other states do not allow underage drinking at all on private property. The states that allow underage drinking need to reconsider what they want with the underage drinking law.
